Upon collapse of coffee sector in1990, s many coffee farmers from potential tea growing zones embarked on tea farming. After 1992, due to high inflation, high bank interest rates, school fees and medical care became a concern to farmers hence the need to form rural Sacco was in great demand. Effectiveness of such institutions could only be realized through polling together and mobilizing resources thereby, meeting member’s needs both timely and economically.
This society was registered in 1994 as Kiegoi Tea Growers Sacco ltd under the co-operative societies Act Cap 490 Laws of Kenya with a common bond.
After registration, the society commenced operations at the local tea extension office before renting own office premises in 1995 with two members of staff. The society offered only Back Office Service activity (BOSA) Services up to late 1997. In the same year multinational banks pulled out several major towns within the country, Maua included. This subjected farmers to costly, risky and inaccessible banking services, which were available only in Meru Town (a distance of fifty four kilometers away).
In 1998, the society commenced a Front Office Service Activity (FOSA) with 14(fourteen) members of staff. Expansion of services and desire to serve a wider scope of membership necessitated need to open society common bond to allow membership of general members of the public residing in Meru-North District and its environs. Amending the society by- laws in 2004 and changing the society Name from Kiegoi Tea Growers Sacco to Nyambene Arimi Sacco Society Ltd achieved this new objective currently serving all people countrywide
